Memorial Day 2014
Wishing everyone a very, very Happy Memorial Day!! Today we remember and honor our soldiers and those loved ones that have fallen or we have lost in active service.
Some fun facts I learned about Memorial Day:
– It was originally called Decoration Day because it would mark the day where soldiers would decorate the graves of those that have fallen
– At 3 p.m. today (or the last Monday of May), Congress passed a law that requires Americans to take a moment of silence to honor our fallen soldiers which was signed by President Bill Clinton
– Waterloo, NY is considered the birthplace of Memorial Day
– Red poppies are known as a symbol of remembrance
I never heard about this rule at 3 p.m. until I read about it today! Regardless of the law, everyone should take a moment and appreciate the freedom we have and how the fallen have given up their lives for us to live the way we want, comfortably! I am guilty and will admit that I have not been good about taking a moment to just thank them for their courage and honor their lives as often as I should.
I had an amazing weekend with my family! One spot we went to this Memorial Day weekend was Lake Berryessa. Beautiful lake and gorgeous weather. We rented a boat that had a BBQ grill on it and took it out on the water all day! It was the most amazing day ever! BBQ and me… there’s nothing that I love more than anything that has to do with BBQ! I have to admit I didn’t do that meat for this trip. It was my day “off”…haha. At the lake, you can rent a boat or bring your own, jet-skis, tubes, and even camp out if you like. The water was chilly initially, but got warmer as you stayed in longer. Weather changes have affected natural parks and riverbanks tremendously over the years. Lake Berryessa was 20 feet lower than it was 2 years ago.
